World records smashed double time at Quelle Challenge Roth
14 Jul 2008
On a wet day in Germany, and the first in 5 years for this race, Ironman Australia winner Patrick Vernay (NCL) won the 2008 Quelle Challenge Roth and held off a host of tough challengers. Pete Jacobs took swim exit honors, lost a few positions on his bike leg, but then fought his way up the field to secure second place while Torbjorn Sindballe finished third.
Everyone was waiting to see how Chris McCormack’s would perform after winning Ironman Germany only a week before, so it was no surprise to anyone when he pulled out during the bike leg.
Newsworthy was the extremely fast women’s race. Yvonne Van Vlerken (NED) raced to the finish line to create a new world best time of 8:45:48 enroute to her win in the women’s race. Erika Csomor (HUN) placed second and also broke the original record. blueseventy’s Gina Ferguson (NZL) rounded out the podium with a daring third as she sprinted to the finish line. Quelle Challenge Roth’s darling, Belinda Granger, although placing 4th proved she is only getting better as she nailed herself a PB time.
